Akwaaba! This is the Twi word for “welcome”. Twi is one of the most spoken languages in Ghana. Every single one of our Ghanaian hosts welcomed us with Akwaaba during our study trip to Ghana. On the 30th of March 2008, 30 MIT Sloanies returned from a trip that produced memories that will easily last a lifetime.

Austin’s South by Southwest music conference and festival is the ultimate music fan experience, with hundreds of bands performing over five days in every corner of the city, but it isn’t marketed to fans. For the festival, for the labels, and for the bands, the fans are simply not the focus.

Not many people have the opportunity to spend two years and 150K to figure out what they want to do with their lives. While not in the orientation pack, many have come to realize the career process goes something like this. First, you convince yourself and a panel of admissions experts that you know what you want to do with your life.

“Is there a doctor on the plane?” I heard in my semi-conscious state of slumber. No sooner did we hear the announcement, Basmaa Ali (MBA ’08) was rushing to the front of the plane to save the day. “Oh it was nothing,” she said modestly when we arrived in Bahrain.

After spending an afternoon at the adMIT weekend a couple of weeks ago somebody asked me, “what do the adMITs look like”? “They look just like we did a year ago”, I replied. And they do. The soon to be class of 2010 walked around campus exuding the same mix of nervous excitement and enthusiasm that we did when we first set foot on the ground outside E51.

Letter from the Editor Emeritus: My MIT Sloan Community

In the fall, the MIT Sloan Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual, and Transgender Club received a threatening email in a response to an announcement sent to our Yahoo Group. When I learned of this email, I had one overpowering reaction: shock. I was shocked because my experience of MIT Sloan has been one of continual support and inclusion, and I could not believe that such extreme intolerance could come from within our student body.

It’s the last 15 of the school year and 141 Charles Street will be wrapping up the last party event in the coming 2 weeks. The portfolio will be undergoing a rebalancing as we bring in a new social management team to take the helm in the fall. Thus, the 141 Portfolio would like to dedicate this final 15 piece to those 141 2nd years that have delivered the highest social return in the 141 parties we have enjoyed during the past fall and Spring terms.
